Gold

Who is the author?

It has always been a dream of Abi Ayres to create a legacy for her posterity and she has done exactly that through publishing this collection. "Gold" has taken over six years to create and is considered one of her greatest achievements. She has been able to share some of her favorite life lessons through publishing these children's books. She currently lives in Traverse City, Michigan with her husband, Ammon and their two beautiful children.

Who is the Illustrator?

Clarissa Lewis Anderson is an artist from the very beautiful Traverse City, Michigan. Following in the footsteps of her older sister Betsy, she recently graduated from Brigham Young University in Studio Art and now lives with her husband Andy in Salt Lake City, Utah.

What is the story behind A Collection of Colors?

During Abi’s last semester at Utah State University she took a creative writing class. They were given an assignment to write a List Poem about a color of their choice. The poem had to be less than a page long, double spaced. She chose to write about the color brown. Seven years later, after the birth of her first child she quit working full time and decided to start writing more List Poems. She read them to her family and they inspired her to publish them. She made them into children’s books and "Gold" is the first in the series.

What books can I expect next?

“Maroon” is coming next. Maroon is Abi’s least favorite color so the main lesson in “Maroon” is finding the good in the things we don’t like.

I am so glad that Ayres and Anderson have come together to share their remarkable book with the world. GOLD is the first color in a book series about colors.  Gold is first then comes maroon followed by brown, black, white and then lastly black and white. But this book is so much more than a story, it is a list poem! How cool is that!  I think that this series will not only inspire the imagination, but will also inspire children and adults alike to write their own list poems.

I find that every time I pick up this book I find another reason to love it.  As a parent, I am always trying to find books that inspire my children's creativity and books that also provide moral lessons or talking points.  GOLD provides a plethora of these talking points and lessons both in the way the word gold is used and also how gold has various meanings depending on the context.  In our house the number one rule is the golden rule.  So this book as already become a household favorite!  My son is a lover of facts, so the back pages of the book is where he's instantly drawn because it explains the origins of the sayings and events regarding gold. Whereas, my other son is a lover of pictures and expression through art, so he is in love with the detailed and stunning pictures that captivate and illustrate the story perfectly!  So, GOLD has delighted both my children!!!  I, like my children, adore this book and cannot wait to see where this series takes us.  There is just so much to love!

I adore everything about this book and I cannot wait to create a lesson in my Art Through Stories class surrounding this book. I am sure my kids and their parents will love this book as much as we did!

5 golden stars!
