#MMBBR #Review #FirstLine #AlfieAndMe by @carlsafina via @wwnorton

#FirstLine - The Little Owl had for more than a year been living a comfortable, healthy life.

Alfie & Me isn't just a book; it's a profound journey that resonates deeply with me as an owl enthusiast. I've always had a special place in my heart for these magnificent birds and even have a collection of owl items, so Carl Safina's tale of his unique relationship with an orphaned screech owl, Alfie, truly spoke to my soul.

As I delved into the pages of this book, I couldn't help but marvel at how Carl and Patricia took in a near-death baby owl, fully expecting her presence to be temporary. But when Alfie's feathers didn't grow correctly, her stay became prolonged, and she started to make a place for herself in their lives. The more I read, the more I felt the deep connection that formed between Alfie and the Safinas – a connection that was profoundly mutual. I could relate to the idea that owls, with their mysterious and wise demeanor, can become an integral part of one's life, almost like an enigmatic friend.

What makes this story even more captivating is the way Carl Safina weaves it into the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many of us found ourselves spending more time at home, exploring our immediate surroundings, and reevaluating our relationship with the natural world. As someone who adores owls, I couldn't help but appreciate the intricate details of Alfie's life and her eventual release into the wild.

Safina's observations and reflections throughout the book provide a unique perspective on humanity's connection with nature, and for someone like me, who cherishes owls, it's like a window into a world I've always yearned to understand better. Alfie & Me is more than just a story; it's a profound exploration of the bonds that form between humans and the natural world. This book holds a special place in my heart as an owl lover, offering a deeper appreciation for our place within the grand tapestry of nature. It's a must-read for anyone who, like me, finds solace and wonder in the eyes of these remarkable birds.

#MMBBR #Review #FirstLine #TheLittleVeniceBookshop by @jaxandwillsmum at via @HQStories

#FirstRead - On Ko Pha Ngan island the full moon sinks into the horizon where the sky meets the sea.

The Little Venice Bookshop is a heartwarming tale of love, loss, and self-discovery that takes readers on an enchanting journey through the picturesque canals of Venice. Luna's emotional journey, set against the backdrop of a charming but fading bookshop, is both poignant and captivating. The mysterious letters she stumbles upon add an element of intrigue, drawing readers deeper into the story. As Luna delves into her mother's past, the narrative beautifully unfolds, revealing the secrets of her family history and allowing Luna to find her own place in the world. The vivid descriptions of Venice add a wonderful layer to the story, making readers feel as if they are strolling through its enchanting streets themselves. The Little Venice Bookshop is a touching and evocative read that explores the themes of love and belonging, making it a delightful choice for those who enjoy stories of self-discovery in unique and atmospheric settings. A must read!

#MMBBR #Review #ShittyCraftClub by @ItSamReece @WunderBooks_PR @ChronicleBooks

“Shitty Craft Club” is an absolutely glorious and incredibly refreshing take on the world of crafting and creativity. Sam Reece, the comedic genius behind the TikTok sensation, offers a hilarious and empowering guide that encourages you to embrace chaos, find inner calm, and unleash your inner artist, no matter how unconventional or "shitty" your creations may seem.

This book is a delightful departure from the traditional crafting guides, as it celebrates the spirit of trying your best rather than pursuing perfection. With a whimsical mix of step-by-step instructions and side-splittingly funny anecdotes from Sam Reece's life, it's a crafting journey that's as weird, wild, and wonderful as you want it to be. Imagine the nihilistic humor of millennial/Gen Z culture, the offbeat crafting style of Amy Sedaris, and a generous sprinkle of Lisa Frank-inspired vibes – that's the essence of "Shitty Craft Club."

From making pom-poms to sculpting a rhinestone shrimp out of aluminum foil, the book challenges your notion of what a craft can be. It reminds us that life is often hard, and sometimes the most therapeutic thing you can do is glue some trash to more trash, all in the name of happiness.

Sam Reece's Shitty Craft Club has created a phenomenon, resonating with a world that's stressed out and yearning for creative outlets. This book captures the magic of the club and inspires you to start your own. In a time when self-compassion is needed more than ever, "Shitty Craft Club" offers the tools to cope creatively without the pressure of perfection.

If you're a fan of DIY crafting or looking for a unique approach to self-care and mindfulness, this book is a gem. It's a quirky and inspiring addition to the crafting world, ideal for fans of "Making It," "Nailed It!," and "At Home with Amy Sedaris." Whether you're a seasoned crafter or a beginner, "Shitty Craft Club" is a breath of fresh air that encourages you to let go of expectations and enjoy the wonderful messiness of creativity. It's not just a craft book; it's a permission slip to have a great time being you. Perfect for gifting on any occasion, this book is a treasure trove of creative joy.

#FirstLine - Emergencies never happened during normal business hours.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

"Don't miss this charming Christmas tale of thawing hearts, escaping dogs, and finding home. I couldn't help digging into this book with both paws."—Debbie Macomber, #1 New York Timesbestselling author of Must Love Flowers

The ultimate holiday gift from New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs: a delightful novel about a Christmas transport of rescue puppies that’s guaranteed to warm listeners’ hearts.

Brenda Malloy wants nothing to do with Christmas ever again. Last year, Brenda and her husband rushed their beloved dog Tim to the emergency vet on Christmas eve. The good news: Tim survived after the vet cleared the obstruction—a pair of women’s lace undies. The bad news: the undies were not Brenda’s.

A year after the breakup, Brenda has put her life back together. She’s trained for a marathon, is writing a children’s novel, and she’s found purpose and healing as a volunteer with a dog rescue organization in Houston, Texas. The rescue partners with a program in Avalon, New York—a small, snowy town deep in the Catskills. Now Brenda is arranging the transport of rescued dogs from Houston to Avalon—just in time for a merry Christmas with their forever families. Brenda’s friends worry about her driving a van two thousand miles with twelve dogs in crates, but she shrugs off their concern. How hard can it be? She knows the way, and she’s just looking to escape the Christmas overload for a while.

But a blinding snowstorm, an escaped mutt, and a life-saving encounter with Adam Bellamy—a single dad and paramedic—means Brenda has to stay in Avalon longer than she planned. As she drops off each precious pup at their new homes, some of the comfort and joy of the season begins to creep up on Brenda despite her determination to avoid the holidays. Perhaps you can bring Christmas into your heart after all...if you have the right furry friends to guide the way.

The Mumu will not let Bunso draw (on the walls), eat ice cream (before dinner), or play video games (his older brother’s). But Bunso has had enough! Gearing up to fight back against this destroyer of fun, Bunso makes surprising discoveries about the Mumu (and himself) in this fun, comic-like picture book that introduces children to Filipino culture and words.

Young and in love, Momma Red and Poppa Yellow Tomato decide to have a baby tomato. However, Momma and Poppa quickly learn that they cannot properly care for their sweet seedling the way they want and make the difficult decision to release her to another loving tomato family in Hopewell Garden, using the assistance of a helpful ladybug adoption agent. Hello, Sweet Baby is a heartfelt, magical story by a bright new talent about adoption, making tough choices, honoring differences, and celebrating different types of families.

About the Author: At age 46, Janeen Jackson received unexpected news through DNA technology: she was adopted and biracial. She found inspiration for this book in a small tomato garden at her son Phoenix’s elementary school. Writing this story was Janeen’s way of explaining her adoption, her mixed race background, the family that released her, and the family that adopted her and loved her as their own. Janeen was a longtime resident of Santa Monica, CA, and in 2022 moved to Evanston, IL, with her husband, Ron Clark, and their two sons, Tyson and Phoenix. She received her B.A. from the HBCU Norfolk State University and completed her master’s in Education Leadership and Change in 2020 from Antioch University. Hello, Sweet Baby is Janeen’s first children’s book. Janeen is represented by Jesse B. Creative and you can find her online at janeenjackson.com and read her blog mixedupdiary.com.
