From the internationally bestselling author Catherine McKenzie comes an evocative tale of two women navigating the secrets and lies at the heart of a wildfire threatening their town.

After a decade-long career combating wildfires, Elizabeth has traded in for a quieter life with her husband. Now she works as the local arson investigator in a beautiful, quaint town in the Rockies. But that tranquil life vanishes when she and her husband agree to divorce, and when a fire started in nearby Cooper Basin begins to spread rapidly. For Elizabeth, containing a raging wildfire is easier than accepting that her marriage has failed.

For Elizabeth’s ex-friend Mindy, who feels disconnected from her husband and teenage children, the fire represents a chance to find a new purpose: helping a man who lost his home to the blaze. But her faith is shattered by a shocking accusation.

As the encroaching inferno threatens the town’s residents, Elizabeth and Mindy must discover what will be lost in the fire, and what will be saved.

1. What makes SMOKE a great book club pick?

I think there are some good points for discussion in the book: friendships, secrets kept from spouses, the effect that infertility can have on a couple, the effect that being a stay at home mom can.

2.  How did you conceive the idea for SMOKE?

A small town I visit frequently was threatened by a wildfire and that got me thinking about the things that could get lost in a fire and how it can bring other things into perspective.

3.  Did it require a lot of research to write SMOKE?

Some! I had to learn about arson investigation and fire chemistry and something about wildland firefighting.

4.  What part of being a writer is most fun?

The writing part, when you’re creating on your own. And then talking to readers after it’s out.

5.  Did you ever want to be anything other than a writer?

Yep. In fact I am something else too, a lawyer. Also wanted to be an astronaut but I guess that’s not happening.

6.  Do you have a it special events or promotions forthcoming?

I’m doing some events this spring and summer. You can check out my website for the details:www.catherinemckenzie.com

7.  Are you working on something new???

Yes! My new book, FRACTURED, is coming out on October 4th! It asks the question: how can the best of friends become enemies and what might result?
