#MMBBR #Review Forks, Knives, and Spoons by @LeahDeCesare @GoSparkPress

There are three kinds of guys: forks, knives, and spoons. That is the final lesson that Amy York’s father sends her off to college with, never suspecting just how far his daughter will take it. Clinging to the Utensil Classification System as her guide, Amy tries to convince her skeptical roommate, Veronica Warren, of its usefulness as they navigate the heartbreaks and soul mates of college and beyond.

Beginning in 1988, their freshman year at Syracuse University, Amy and Veronica meet an assortment of guys―from slotted spoons and shrimp forks to butter knives and sporks―all while trying to learn if the UCS holds true. On the quest to find their perfect steak knives, they learn to believe in themselves―and not to settle in love or life.

This book was such a fun read.  I really loved it.  It is one of those reads that has a ton of heart.  It is one of those reads that you cannot wait to get wrapped up in.  I cannot help but to look back at my younger years with both wonder and fondness because De Cesare captures what is was like to live through that time with beautiful perfection.  Ever since I finished this book I am noticing forks, knives and spoons everywhere!  You want to add this book to your to be read pile and I am certain that you will love it as much as I did.  A home run of a read and a perfect book club pick.

In the Light of the Garden: A Novel by [Burch, Heather]
In the Light of the Garden is a novel about unearthed family secrets, the enchantment of past loves, and the indelible power of forgiveness.
Inheriting her grandparents’ island estate on Florida’s Gulf coast is a special kind of homecoming for thirty-one-year-old Charity Baxter. Raised by a narcissistic single mother, Charity’s only sense of a loving home comes from childhood summers spent with Gramps and Grandma. But piercing her fondest memories is her sharpest grief—the death of her beloved grandmother, when Charity stopped believing in the magical healing power of the weeping willow that still casts a shadow on their property.
Now that Charity has returned, she’s full of longing and regret, until she befriends her neighbor Dalton Reynolds, who has come to Gaslamp Island carrying his own heartache. As other exiles arrive—a great uncle harboring secrets, a teenage runaway—Charity begins to reconsider what makes a family. When her own estranged mother shows up in crisis, Charity is challenged to search her heart for forgiveness. But forgiving herself may require a little magic from the last place she’d expect to find it.

MY REVIEW:
A dash of magic, some romance and one well written story with characters you grow to care about IN THE LIGHT OF THE GARDEN is a delight of a read.  It will be both heartbreaking and heartwarming mixed together.  You will be taken away in the story and enjoy every moment of it.

#FirstLine ~ When Charity Baxter was little, she believed in fairies and pixies and the kind of magic that made unicorns and cotton candy.

The Fifth Letter by [Moriarty, Nicola]

A fun vacation game turns destructive, exposing dark secrets, deeply buried grudges, and a shocking betrayal in Nicola Moriarity’s intriguing debut.
Four friends . . .
Joni, Deb, Eden, and Trina have been best friends since high school, sharing a bond that has seen them through their teenage years and into adulthood. But now, time and circumstance is starting to pull them apart as careers, husbands, and babies get in the way. As their yearly vacation becomes less of a priority—at least for three of the women—how can Joni find a way to draw the four of them back together?
Four secrets . . .
During a laughter and wine-filled night, the women dare one another to write anonymous letters, spilling their deepest, darkest secrets. But the fun game turns devastating, exposing cracks in their lives and the friendship they share. Each letter is a dark confession revealing shocking information. A troubled marriage? A substance abuse problem? A secret pregnancy? A heartbreaking diagnosis?
Five letters . . .
Late on one of their last nights together, after the other three have gone to bed, Joni notices something in the fireplace—a burnt, crumpled, nearly destroyed, sheet of paper that holds the most shattering revelation of all. It is a fifth letter—a hate-filled rant that exposes a vicious, deeply hidden grudge that has festered for decades. But who wrote it? Which one of them has seethed with resentment all these years? What should Joni do?
Best friends are supposed to keep your darkest secrets. But the revelations Joni, Deb, Eden and Trina have shared will ripple through their lives with unforeseen consequences . . . and things will never be the same.

MY REVIEW:
This book is great.  It is such a great story that makes you really think about your friendships.  There are serious complexities to the dynamic of female friendships and this book highlights that with suspense, pacing and great storytelling.  This book would be perfect for a book club because it would spark some serious and honest conversations among friends.  It is a roller coaster of emotions and one read, that I could not put down.  I highly recommend it.

#FirstLine ~ Joni's first thought was that she wasn't the right person to find it.

33509969

The Cubit Quest
Twelve-year-old Charlie Watkins could have inherited his dad’s massive intellect.
He got his massive feet instead.

Perhaps if Charlie had that intellect he might have been able to figure out why so many men in suits were suddenly following him or where his dad hid the Cubit - a mythical object that men have sworn to protect and even more have died trying to possess - before his so-called accident.

If starting yet another new school wasn’t bad enough, Charlie meets Mr Leopold, a disfigured, mind-reading lunatic and discovers that he alone must find the Cubit if he is to save his dad. The Brotherhood, however, have other ideas. Led by the ruthless Draganovic, they will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. With the help of Mr Leopold and fellow new boy Elvis, Charlie sets out on The Cubit Quest.

Hunting for the Cubit, playing football, lessons with the dreaded Funeral Face and unsuccessfully avoiding school bully Grimshaw by day, Charlie finds his nights no less complicated. Stalked in his dreams, he’s soon immersed in a world of power struggles, battling dragons and duels to the death. With the Brotherhood hot on his heels and as the bullets begin to fly, there are no guarantees that Charlie, or anyone else, will make it to the end in one piece.

#MMBBR #Review #TheWickedCity by @bcwilliamsbooks #FirstLine

The Wicked City: A Novel by [Williams, Beatriz]

New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams recreates the New York City of A Certain Age in this deliciously spicy adventure that mixes past and present and centers on a Jazz Age love triangle involving a rugged Prohibition agent, a saucy redheaded flapper, and a debonair Princetonian from a wealthy family.
When she discovers her husband cheating, Ella Hawthorne impulsively moves out of their SoHo loft and into a small apartment in an old Greenwich Village building. Her surprisingly attractive new neighbor, Hector, warns her to stay out of the basement at night. Tenants have reported strange noises after midnight—laughter, clinking glasses, jazz piano—even though the space has been empty for decades. Back in the Roaring Twenties, the place hid a speakeasy.
In 1924, Geneva "Gin" Kelly, a smart-mouthed flapper from the hills of western Maryland, is a regular at this Village hideaway known as the Christopher Club. Caught up in a raid, Gin becomes entangled with Prohibition enforcement agent Oliver Anson, who persuades her to help him catch her stepfather Duke Kelly, one of Appalachia’s most notorious bootleggers.
Headstrong and independent, Gin is no weak-kneed fool. So how can she be falling in love with the taciturn, straight-arrow Revenue agent when she’s got Princeton boy Billy Marshall, the dashing son of society doyenne Theresa Marshall, begging to make an honest woman of her? While anything goes in the Roaring Twenties, Gin’s adventures will shake proper Manhattan society to its foundations, exposing secrets that shock even this free-spirited redhead—secrets that will echo from Park Avenue to the hollers of her Southern hometown.
As Ella discovers more about the basement speakeasy, she becomes inspired by the spirit of her exuberant predecessor, and decides to live with abandon in the wicked city too. . . .

#FirstLine ~ Ella visited the laundry room for the first time at half past six on a Saturday morning at the beginning of March.

Williams is a brilliant storyteller.  She is not to be missed in the historical genre because her books are well researched and beautifully plotted.  She pays attention to details and fleshes out the characters and maintains the integrity of the story all the way through.  THE WICKED CITY is a great book with lots of story and dual timelines.  It was engaging and one I would love to see made into a mini series!  Not to be missed!!!

Beatriz WilliamsA graduate of Stanford University with an MBA from Columbia, Beatriz spent several years in New York and London hiding her early attempts at fiction, first on company laptops as a corporate and communications strategy consultant, and then as an at-home producer of small persons. She now lives with her husband and four children near the Connecticut shore, where she divides her time between writing and laundry.

This is on my short stack to review...but wanted to share it before then because it sounds fantastic....
Stalked (The Profiler) by [Heiter, Elizabeth]

That's the note seventeen-year-old Haley Cooke leaves behind when she disappears from inside her high school. FBI profiler Evelyn Baine is called in to figure out who had reason to hurt her. On the surface, the popular cheerleader has no enemies, but as Evelyn digs deeper, she discovers that everyone close to Haley has something to hide. Everyone from estranged parents, to an older boyfriend with questionable connections, to a best friend who envies Haley's life.
Secrets can be deadly…
One of those secrets may have gotten Haley killed. If she's still alive, Evelyn knows that the more the investigation ramps up, the more pressure they could be putting on Haley's kidnapper to make her disappear for good. It's also possible the teenager isn't in danger at all, but has skillfully manipulated everyone and staged her own disappearance. Only one thing is certain: uncovering Haley's fate could be dangerous—even deadly—to Evelyn herself.

Shackles From the Deep: Tracing the Path of a Sunken Slave Ship, a Bitter Past, and a Rich Legacy by [Cottman, Michael]

A pile of lime-encrusted shackles discovered on the seafloor in the remains of a ship called the Henrietta Marie, lands Michael Cottman, a Washington, D.C.-based journalist and avid scuba diver, in the middle of an amazing journey that stretches across three continents, from foundries and tombs in England, to slave ports on the shores of West Africa, to present-day Caribbean plantations. This is more than just the story of one ship – it's the untold story of millions of people taken as captives to the New World. Told from the author's perspective, this book introduces young readers to the wonders of diving, detective work, and discovery, while shedding light on the history of slavery.

MY REVIEW:
What an important book for young readers, not only to encourage kids to take on grand adventures and exploration, but to also question the past and learn from it in order to make a better future.  My son has begun reading this book and it has opened many important discussions between us regarding slavery, sea exploration, diving and ways that we can make the world a better place.  I think this story is relevant and important today and always.  Brilliantly written for young readers, this book is sure to keep their attention and open them up to learning so many important things.

The March Against Fear: The Last Great Walk of the Civil Rights Movement and the Emergence of Black Power by [Bausum, Ann]

James Meredith's 1966 march in Mississippi began as one man's peaceful protest for voter registration and became one of the South's most important demonstrations of the civil rights movement. It brought together leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Stokely Carmichael, who formed an unlikely alliance that resulted in the Black Power movement, which ushered in a new era in the fight for equality.

The retelling of Meredith's story opens on the day of his assassination attempt and goes back in time to recount the moments leading up to that event and its aftermath. Readers learn about the powerful figures and emerging leaders who joined the over 200-mile walk that became known as the "March Against Fear."

Thoughtfully presented by award-winning author Ann Bausum, this book helps readers understand the complex issues of fear, injustice, and the challenges of change. It is a history lesson that's as important and relevant today as it was 50 years ago.

MY REVIEW:
This book is fantastic.  I think that the topics of fear, injustice and difficult to explain history is hard to teach to younger children, but this book captures all it complexities and details beautifully.  This book is packed with factual information that engages the reader and that amazing text is accompanied by pictures and quotes that deepen the reading experience.  It is brilliant and important reading for children and their parents.  A must read for today's time, which allows us to learn from past mistakes, to highlight those that changed history and to find ways to make the world a better place.  A beautifully and thoughtful book.

Hattie Peck: The Journey Home by [Levey, Emma]

Buy the books HERE

ABOUT THE BOOK:  Hattie Peck adores eggs of all kinds. However, she cannot make any of her own. No worries—Hattie has collected eggs from all over the world, hatched them, and raised her blended family of cockatoos, storks, owls, anything from an egg—even reptiles.

But now it’s time. They all need to leave her big loving nest.
So off the flock goes, on their biggest—and saddest—adventure. Even though, in her heart, Hattie knows it’s best.

A poignant story about family and differences, making hard decisions, letting go and inclusion. It’s not all sad, though, due to a nice twist ending as in the first book.

Bright colorful and lively illustrations and lots of information about egg-bearing animals round out the story.

Emma LeveyFreelance illustrator based in Cardiff. Author/Illustrator of Hattie Peck and Hattie Peck The Journey Home

What a perfect story about the crazy thing we call family and its ever changing ways, delightful chaos and everything in between.  This story is about every family...the highs and lows, the pretty moments and the messy ones too.  It is beautifully illustrated and a new favorite of mine!  Everything in this book is pure love!  It is about growing up and moving on, but never forgetting where home is.   A must for every child's home library.

Bride of The Dragons: Shifter Menage Fantasy Romance by [Coffey, Selina]

Elokon and Siron have yet to find a mate.

Elokon became the alpha of his tribe three months ago, and since then, the human towns nearby have sent a dozen women in tribute, and even the women of nearby dragon tribes have sought them out. Elokon’s tribe is powerful and any dragon would be pleased to bear a child of his bloodline.

But neither he nor Siron has seen a single woman that awakens the mating instinct. At long last, the High Dragon has passed down an edict: find a mate, or Elokon will be stripped of his power and banished. There is no place in the Dragonlands for an alpha who will not carry on the old bloodlines.

As the third daughter of an impoverished Earl, Adelina has no dowry and no prospects.

Desperate not to become a priestess, she makes a plan: when the High Dragon’s court comes for their historic meeting with the human king, she will be so alluring that she can steal the heart of one of the richest noblemen at court. She has worked late into the night, sewing herself a dress that will catch anyone’s eye.

During the festivities, she knows she can tempt someone into an indiscretion…

But much to her shock, that someone isn’t human. Furthermore, it’s not one someone, but two. And now that they’ve found their mate, Elokon and Siron aren’t planning to let her go.

Q.  What inspires your writing?
A.  Well hello, and thank you for this opportunity to wag my chin with you LOL…Life inspires me, people inspire me,  I am fascinated by human nature and by the situations they get themselves into and I can’t imagine a better way to spend time than finding out things and then weaving stories around them.  It’s such an adventure.

Q.  What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
A.  I’ve always been a dreamer, it’s like travelling to other worlds and other times from right here and right now, the only difference is that as a writer now I write it down.

Q.  What is the toughest part of being a writer?
A.  That’s a good question, I suppose I should say disciplining myself, but honestly I’m pretty good at hitting the chair and firing up the computer and writing some pages; no, for me the problem is getting my household to settle down and give me some peace and quiet so I can think straight.  I have one baby, four dogs and a grown daughter.  And the baby is my husband!!!  I think most women will understand that!

Q.  If you could not be a writer, what would you do/be?
A.   I started as a professional musician, I had some success touring as a keyboard player with a famous group in England, then I transitioned to working in musical theatre in LA and I had a lot of interesting experiences working with singers and dancers and writing and co-writing scripts etc. and so my journey has been an organic one, but always as a creative force.  So I can’t imagine doing anything else, but if you were to press me, then I would have to say maybe have my own bakery and eat cake all the time.

Q.  What would the story of your life be entitled?
A.   LOL!  Nice one!  OK, well my first instinct is to let my dry British sense of humor have free reign and say something like “Anatomy of a mad woman, subtitle; a musical rampage into the unknown,”  but seriously now, a good title might be, “Ramblings; In the hope that what I’ve learned might be of some use.”

Q.  What is your favorite book of all time?
A.    I really had to search my inner database to come up with the answer to this, because I’ve always been a reader and my taste can get pretty eclectic, but when it gets right down to it, if you ask for just one book, ONE book? Well, it would have to be Jane Eyre.

Q.  Which character from ANY book are you most like?
A.    I go back and forth between Doctor Who and Dumbledore, with a sprinkling of Alice (just ask, Alice I think she’ll know…) and a touch of Winnie the Pooh

Q.  What character from all of your books are you most like?
A.    There’s a bit of Mrs. Kulkarni and Mrs. Blithe in me from the Efficiency Claus, and a bit of Devin from the Dream Stealers (when I was young and reckless) and of course Captain Skye from Muffy’s Florida adventure  All my characters are composites, no one is really based on a person that I know, per se, and yet all of them are - If that makes sense.

Q.  Which book would you love to take a weekend vacation inside of?
A.    Well, I live on the water in Florida, and next door is a vacation home where people come from all over Europe.  I often think of the great irony that, as I scrub pots and pans, up to my elbows in big yellow rubber gloves, my neighbors are shouting “Marco Polo” and leaping off the dock into the sea.  LOL,  so for me a good vacation would be to somewhere really urban, like New York or London, somewhere grungy, gray and dirty  LOL, as long as I could get home on Monday morning, that is; like visiting Paris in the time of The Three Musketeers, or Sherlock Holmes’ Baker Street.

Q.  What is your favorite season?
A.    Spring in Paris, summer and fall in England, and winter in Florida.

Q.  What inspired your book cover(s)?  Or what is your favorite book cover and why?
A.    Well, I dabble in painting and so I do the cover art myself, I just really like the cover of the Efficiency Claus, the expression on Santa’s face just tickles me.  I’m currently designing the Dream Stealers’ cover so the jury is still out on that one, but I’m pretty obstinate so I won’t quit until I love it.

Q.  Tell me something funny that happened while on a book tour or while promoting your book.
A.    The day after I finished writing the first Muffy book, Muffy and the Dog Catcher, which is essentially about two Goldendoodle puppies, wouldn’t you know it but two Goldendoodle puppy sisters moved in three houses down.  It was spooky-weird to open my front door and see their owner walking them right past my driveway; they were identical in every way to Muffy and her sister Riff, as I had described them in the book, and I found out later that one of them was named “Addy” which is one of the characters in The Efficiency Claus, which I was about halfway through at the time.  Don’t you just love weird irony.

Q.  Are you working on something new?
A.   Yes, I’m just about to release the Dream Stealers, which is a sort of fantasy space odyssey about a young girl who becomes a fighter pilot and vanquishes the evil lurkers who steal our dreams. And I’m writing a novel called “The Henge.”  I’m about half way through. It’s set thousands of years ago in the Bronze age and actually I would love to spend a weekend with these characters, they are kind of writing me at the moment.

Q.  Anything you want to say to followers of this blog or those that are just stopping by?
A.  I am so honored to have been allowed to visit and I hope you are all reading something to write home about.
