Q. What inspires your writing?
My job as a Broadway producer gives me exclusive behind the
scenes access into show business. Before I started writing, I’d often
meet up with friends for drinks at Sardi’s (just like Scarlett in the book) and
I’d regale them with showbiz stories about my crazy theatrical experiences.
They finally encouraged me to put them into a book. I decided on
fiction so I could include some of the more juicy characters without running
into trouble.
Q. What is your favorite thing about being an author?
I love how my fictional world allows me to process and respond
to what’s happening in my real life. It’s very empowering. It can be easy to
get overwhelmed or discouraged when disappointing things happen in this
competitive business. Now when I encounter any of the mean and nasty people
that I sometimes have to deal with over the course of my job, I know that I can
come home and “deal with” them in a Scarlett Savoy book.
Q. What is the toughest part of being an author?
Since I’m still very active on Broadway, I have to be careful
that my characters truly are fiction. Though they may have aspects of several
real life “characters” I can’t afford to explicitly offend too many people.
Keeping my real identity a secret in the inner circles of the tight knit
Broadway community is definitely a challenge.
Q. If you could not be author, what would you do/be?
I’m lucky to have my dream job as a Broadway producer. Despite
the challenges of working in a high risk world, I also have the privilege of
getting to work at the top of my industry. The red carpets, glittering parties,
and the opportunity to meet all my favorite celebrities is a lot of fun. I’ve
been very fortunate to have found success in two unlikely careers: Broadway
producing and writing. I pinch myself every day just to make sure I’m not
dreaming.
Q. What would the story of your life be entitled?
“Showbiz.” Lol.
Q. What is your favorite book of all time?
There are so many books I love - I couldn’t choose just one!
Q. Which part of
your book(s) was the easiest to write?
I love writing dialogue. That’s probably because my mind is
wired that way due to spending every day reading scripts and overseeing
rehearsals.
Q. Which part of your book(s) was the hardest to write?
Since Showbiz is written from several perspectives, I was forced
to get into the minds of some of my unsavory characters. On one hand, it was
fun, but it was also icky to have to think like these nasty people. I
definitely had to power through some of those chapters.
Q. Which character from any book are you most like?
Scarlett Savoy, my novel’s heroine, hits pretty close to home
obviously. I can only hope I’m as smart, sassy and tenacious as she is.
Q. Can you tell me a little about the inspiration behind your
book cover(s)?
Thanks
for asking! I was lucky in that I got to work closely with my publisher, Dress
Circle Publishing, and their great design team. The zebra stripe theme was a
choice to tie in not only a key piece of Scarlett’s wardrobe, but also the fact
that a key plot point of the book involves a threat to Broadway called “white
space.”
Q. What is your favorite season?
When I lived on the West Coast, I loved winter. Curling up by
the fire with hot cider and a book was my favorite thing to do. Now that I live
in Manhattan, however, I spend a lot more time outside walking between
theaters, meetings, and subway stops and I’ve learned that winters can be
miserable. These days, give me a crisp fall day and I’m pleased as punch.
Q. Tell me something funny that happened while on a book
tour or while promoting your book.
I’ve had several fun/funny experiences since the book has come
out due to the fact that I’ve written it under a pen name. My favorite is when
someone comes up to me and says, “Have you read this Showbiz book? You’d love
it. Scarlett’s just like you!” If only they knew ;)
Q. Are you working on something new?
I’m almost done writing book two of the Scarlett Savoy series.
I’m having so much fun with the continued adventures of my cast of characters.
Q. Anything you want to say to followers of this blog or
those that are just stopping by?
Support the arts! Go to the theater, listen to showtunes, learn
to tap dance or play the piano. Come visit Broadway if you can but even if you
can’t, make time to participate in the arts in your community.
