The Bad Daughter by Joy Fielding

A gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller of family intrigue and dark secrets, from the author of Someone Is Watching and See Jane Run.There was no shortage of words she could use to describe her father, almost none of them complimentary. Serves you damn right, she thought.

A voice mail from her estranged sister, Melanie, sends Robin’s heart racing and her mind spiraling in a full-blown panic attack. Melanie’s message is dire: Their father, his second wife, and his twelve-year-old stepdaughter have been shot—likely in a home invasion—and lie in the hospital in critical condition.

It’s been more than five years since Robin turned her back on her father when he married her best friend. Five years since she said goodbye to her hometown of Red Bluff, California, and became a therapist. More than two years since Robin and Melanie have spoken. Yet even with all that distance and time and acrimony, the past is always with Robin.

Now she must return to the family she left behind. As she attempts to mend fences while her father clings to life, Robin begins to wonder if there is more to the tragedy than a botched burglary attempt. It seems that everyone—Robin’s mercurial sister, her less-than-communicative nephew, her absent brother, and even Tara, her father’s wife—has something to hide. And someone may have put them all in grave danger.

New York Times bestselling author Joy Fielding has written a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller of family intrigue and dark secrets. The Bad Daughter explores the deadly differences between the lies we want to believe and the truths we wish not to know.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Bad Daughter is a book that will leave you reeling. Fielding really got into my head with this one. I was completely enthralled and left guessing around many corners. It was well drawn out and had some unsettling moments that left me breathless. If you love domestic suspense and characters that are flawed, real and compelling then this is the book for you. You may also want to clear your schedule because you may have a hard time pulling it down.

The Mother's Promise: A Novel by [Hepworth, Sally]

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

#FirstLine ~ When the doctor gave Alice Stanhope the news, she was thinking for Zoe.

This book rocked my heart to the core. This book really grabbed my emotions from that first sentence and did not let go. There was a lump in my throat nearly the entire time. But this book was so beautifully done that the stress slowly dissipated as I continued to read. I was so engrossed in this book that I lost track of time. The characters were spot on, dialogue was dynamic and the story is unforgettable. What an emotional read that captures what it means to love as a mother and how the heart can heal and cope. It is one of those books that is both sad and happy. The Mother's Promise is one that I am certain readers will cherish every single word within it.

Sally Hepworth

Sally Hepworth is the bestselling author of The Secrets of Midwives. The Secrets of Midwives has been labelled “enchanting” by The Herald Sun, “smart and engaging” by Publisher’s Weekly, and New York Times bestselling authors Liane Moriarty and Emily Giffin have praised Sally’s debut novel as “women’s fiction at its finest” and “totally absorbing”. The Secrets of Midwives was also the highest selling debut Australian fiction of the year in 2015.

The Boo-Boos That Changed the World: A True Story About an Accidental Invention by Barry Wittenstein
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book is FANTASTIC. I love that it highlight show an accident can be an amazing and positive thing. I have always just took band-aids for granted and now I will never be able to look at them the same. They have rich history and it is worth knowing. The illustrations are just adorable and add so much to the story because as a new or young reader can follow the story through the images in the book. I, as a teacher and mother, love that there is a timeline in the back. It is such a cool way to show children how things progress and lead us to present day. A great book for the classroom!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Eli's Magic Moment is an adorable story that rhymes and is almost sing songy with it prose will be a hit with the younger reader. This book will also make a great read aloud. It is great book to create dialogue with kids both at home and in the classroom.

The world can be a violent place. Although you try to shelter your children, terrible things can happen at any moment. As a parent, you want to protect them, but this isn't always possible. The best thing you can do for your children is make sure you are prepared to help them after a sudden death or other traumatic experience.

25854315

“Divorce” is a big word…especially for little kids. It’s hard for young children to understand what the word means, let alone how it will impact their lives—and it’s hard for us, as grown-ups, to explain it to them in terms they can fully comprehend.

Nonetheless, when a child is involved in a family divorce or separation, it is crucial that he or she understands and embraces the changes… and this book will help you explain the transitions to your child.

Family Changes is a delightfully informative children’s book that tackles a complicated topic in compassionate, child-friendly terms. Ideal for young minds aged four through eight, it features a colorful cast of fuzzy characters led by a young bunny named Zoey, who is struggling with her parents’ divorce and is riddled by important questions and feelings your child is likely to encounter.

In addition to the heartfelt story at its core, Family Changes also offers parents, therapists, teachers, and caregivers valuable information on how to ease children through this significant life change. A comprehensive note to parents and a list of essential child-focused questions are provided to guide the adult and child, and are certain to be an asset to both children and adults involved in the divorce/separation process.

MY REVIEW OF THESE BOOKS:
These are very beneficial stories for any young child dealing with a divorce or death of a friend. These books allow children to better understand the range of emotions that they are feeling after such a disruption happens. It allows the child to be able to relate with a character that is feeling the similar things, has similar questions and similar concerns. Not every child is the same and children may process things differently. This books allows the child to ask question and creates dialogue with parents, family and others. Great books for helping children deal with difficult, traumatic and tough situations.

WOW! If you like twisty. If you like turvy. Then this book is for you. I was on the edge of my seat, never knowing what was around each and every corner. It was one of those reads that leaves you uneasy in a very good way. It was one of those reads that you thought you had it figured out and then "boom"...surprised by a plot twist. It was heart pounding and thought provoking. A must for lovers of a satisfying thriller.

This book was so great. I loved the toe and pace. It was one of those books that grabbed me bit by bit until I could not put it down. I adored the flawed characters, the plot and the satisfying conclusion. I loved how honest and raw this book was. It exposes weaknesses and strengths in equal measure. It is this balance that makes this book one not to be missed.

In the tradition of The Emperor’s Children and The House of Mirth, the forgotten granddaughter of one of New York’s wealthiest men is reunited with her family just as she comes of age—and once she’s had a glimpse of their glittering world, she refuses to let it go without a fight.

When Laila Lawrence becomes an orphan at twenty-three, the sudden loss unexpectedly introduces her to three glamorous cousins from New York who show up unannounced at her mother’s funeral. The three siblings are scions of the wealthy family from which Laila’s father had been estranged long before his own untimely demise ten years before.

Two years later, Laila has left behind her quiet life in Grosse Point, Michigan to move to New York City, landing her smack in the middle of her cousins’ decadent world. As the truth about why Laila’s parents became estranged from the family patriarch becomes clear, Laila grows ever more resolved to claim what’s rightfully hers. Caught between longing for the love of her family and her relentless pursuit of the lifestyle she feels she was unfairly denied, Laila finds herself reawakening a long dead family scandal—not to mention setting off several new ones—as she becomes further enmeshed in the lives and love affairs of her cousins. But will Laila ever, truly, belong in their world? Sly and sexy, She Regrets Nothing is a sharply observed and utterly seductive tale about family, fortune, and fate—and the dark side of wealth.

This book is amazing! I was so involved in the characters and story. I could not put this book down. I find the grit, the power and the family drama within the pages to be original, engaging and FANTASTIC. There is such a great cast of characters with a wonderfully woven tale that will keep the readers burning through pages and trying to guess what will happen next! A must read.

This January, acclaimed YA and MG author Jackson Pearce launches a new series devoted to encouraging tween girls’ interest in STEM: EllieEngineer (Bloomsbury Children’s Books; ISBN: 978-1-6811-9519-3; Hardcover $15.99; January 16, 2018).

Ellie loves to build. She’s always engineering new creations with the help of her imagination and her best friend Kit. Unfortunately, with Kit’s birthday just around the corner, the French-braiding machine Ellie built turns out to be more of a hair-knotting machine. What’s Ellie going to do? Luckily, the girls overhear Kit’s mom talking about Kit’s surprise – it must be the dog she’s always wanted! Ellie is struck with inspiration: she’ll build Kit the best doghouse ever! The project quickly becomes more than just a present for Kit – it builds a bridge between Ellie and those bothersome neighbor boys, as well as the other handy girls in her class.

Designed to look like Ellie’s notepad, with pencil-on-graph-paper illustrations of her projects interspersed throughout the book, EllieEngineer inspires creative and crafty girls to get hands-on with their imagination. Ellie’s projects range from the simple (using a glass against a wall to amplify sounds), to the practical (the doghouse), to the fantastical (a bedroom security system featuring spikes) – encouraging readers to start small but think big. Ellie’s parents support her engineering experiments, with important safety tips sprinkled throughout, and her relationship with Kit is a glowing example of positive female friendship. They share their hobbies – Ellie likes to get her hands dirty, while Kit prefers ballet – reminding readers that there’s no wrong way to be a girl. Ellie’s hand-drawn tool guide at the end explains basic tools in accessible terms, rounding out this fun and funny adventure, and giving girls everything they need to be their own Ellie!

About the Author:  Jackson Pearce lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She is the author of a series of teen retold fairy-tales, including Sisters RedSweetlyFathomless, and Cold Spell, as well as two stand-alones, As You Wish and Purity. As J. Nelle Patrick, she is the author of Tsarina. In addition to The Doublecross and The Inside Job, her middle grade novels include Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures, co-written with Maggie Stiefvater. Visit her at www.jacksonpearce.com and @JacksonPearce (Twitter and Instagram).

Girl Power! Ellie is amazing. I loved her so much! She as such a distinct and strong character. She was also smart, clever and imaginative. I loved that this book highlights the fact that there should be no gender assigned to certain jobs or interests. Ellie does what she is good at and does it well. I loved the drawings from Ellie's notepad. With encouragement from her parents, along with tips to stay safe, this book teaches kids to think big, never to give up and to use their brains in positive ways. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. It was a sheer delight and I highly recommend this!

I loved this book. I laughed out loud and was taken on a wild ride with this unusual cast of toys. I was rooting for Grumbolt from the start and could relate to the struggles he faced. I think most kids will be able to relate and that is why this book will be a HUGE hit. I thought this book was both clever and original. I want all kids to read this book because it illustrates that we may not always know what we are supposed to do or who we really are and that is OK. We just need to live our lives, be kind and stand up for what is right. I adored this book and I highly recommend it. Thanks to Scholastic for providing me a free copy for review.

#MMBBR #Review #RalphieAlwaysLoved @AndieYerramilli

This is the story of the life, love, and adventures of a beloved family dog, and how he delighted and touched his family and everyone he met.

Ralphie was born with a heart on his belly.
He loves food, his family, his friends, his neighbors.
He loves pretty much everything and everyone.
And they love him back.
And that's how it is all through his life.
Read the book and fall in love with him too.

Rambunctious and hyperactive, Ralphie had already been returned to the animal shelter three times, but when Andrea and her husband adopted him and gave him a loving home where he was understood, accepted, and taught, he learned fast. As Ralphie's human family grew, so did his capacity for love and the ways he could express it. He remained a loving and beloved family member who touched the hearts of the whole neighborhood until he was ready to say goodbye at the grand-old age of sixteen. Ralphie, Always Loved will remind you of all that is good, and reaffirm your belief in love's power to uplift and transform.

A  beautiful story for children to learn about love through the eyes of a dog.  Ralphie had a rough start to his life, but when the right family found him and adopted him his life was forever changed. Watching Ralphie go through life and grow old with his family is a the true definition of love. Such a great book to talk with children about the responsibility of the dog, the joy they bring to the family and the hard times of saying goodbye to the dog at the end of its life. A great well rounded story that is full of heart.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookseller comes a gripping literary suspense novel set in the 1960s about a deeply troubled family and three women who will reveal its dark truths.

In the autumn of 1960, Angie Glass is living an idyllic life in her Wisconsin hometown. At twenty-one, she’s married to charming, handsome Paul, and has just given birth to a baby boy. But one phone call changes her life forever.

When Paul’s niece, Ruby, reports that her father, Henry, has committed suicide, and that her mother, Silja, is missing, Angie and Paul drop everything and fly to the small upstate town of Stonekill, New York to be by Ruby’s side.

Angie thinks they’re coming to the rescue of Paul’s grief-stricken young niece, but Ruby is a composed and enigmatic seventeen-year-old who resists Angie’s attempts to nurture her. As Angie learns more about the complicated Glass family, staying in Henry and Silja’s eerie and ultra-modern house on the edge of the woods, she begins to question the very fabric of her own marriage.

Through Silja’s flashbacks, Angie’s discovery of astonishing truths, and Ruby’s strategic dissection of her parents’ state of affairs, a story of love, secrets, and ultimate betrayal is revealed.

This book was FANTASTIC. I loved it cover to cover. I was pulled into the lives of all the characters immediately and was amazed how it all came together. There is an underlying tension throughout the book and it all comes to a head by the end. It was so well constructed and paced. Such an intense and deeply touching novel that will keep the reader burning through the pages.

Literary Mystery Highlights an Heirloom Painting on Long Island Sound and

the Relationships between Three Generations of Women
Part “who-done-it” and part family drama, this award-winning novel
reveals that neither people nor paintings are always what they appear to be
Contradictory relationships within troubled families are nothing new, but the award-winning psychological novel written by well-known journalist Diane B. Saxton elevates these relationships and the mysterious heirloom painting that both exposes and unites them to an art form.
Peregrine Island interweaves the stories of three generations of women, one valuable painting, the artist who created it, and those who would do anything to possess it – including kill.
Lush with sensory details, this psychologically complex mystery novel is set on a private island in the middle of Long Island Sound. It begins when the family’s lives are turned upside-down one summer by so-called art experts, who appear on the doorstep of their isolated home to appraise a favorite heirloom painting. When incriminating papers along with two other paintings are discovered behind the painting in question, the appraisal turns into a full-fledged investigation and detectives are called into the case— but not by the family whose members grow increasingly antagonistic toward one another.
During the course of the inquiry and as the summer progresses, the family members discover new secrets about one another and new facts about their past. Above all, they learn that neither people nor paintings can be taken at face value.
