Avenger (Halflings, #3)
Book 3
Heather Burch Brings Readers Back to Another Realm with “Avenger,”
the Third Book in the Wildly Popular Supernatural Series “Halflings”
Halflings scribe Heather Burch pits her 17-year-old heroine Nikki Youngblood up against her most ominous opponents to date, a demonic seeker and a fully powered Damon Vessler, in the eagerly awaited third book in the supernatural series, AVENGER.
In the exciting new sequel, fans (aka “Fanlings”) will reunite with the tomboy who, after wounding Damon in last year’s Guardian, must find the courage to defeat him once and for all.

Nikki is adjusting to life as a Halfling when she finds herself on the run from the deadly seeker Damon sent after her. With her life and those of the other Halflings (including boyfriend, Mace, and admirer, Raven) threatened, she is forced to become the hero they all know her to be. Put to the test, Nikki determines quickly that her karate sword is not the answer to conquering her adversaries, but it is her faith that is her best weapon.

From the start, Burch captures readers and places them at the center of the action. They will anxiously follow along as Nikki faces off against several dark forces, leading to a nail-biting battle with Damon. It is this escalating tension that fans have come to anticipate from Burch.

The fight sequences are only part of what will keep readers glued to each page. Those still wondering about the romantic cliffhanger in Guardian will discover in AVENGER that although Nikki may be settled into her relationship with Mace, Raven still waits in the wings. In fact, Raven may be the only one who can keep Nikki safe. While she’s sure Mace is the one for her, Nikki can’t help feeling respect and even a glimmer of adoration for Raven.  At a time when both their fates are in her hands, she struggles to make sense of it all.

Burch scores again with a brooding new tale in the Halflings series that clenches readers with a fascinating portrayal of young woman torn between her heart and her destiny. The author’s perfectly crafted high-intensity scenes are countered with delicate romantic and faith-based elements that create a well-balanced, nuanced story.

Fanlings new and old will not be disappointed with AVENGER. By the end of the book, they will be clamoring to find out what happens next in this hypnotic saga.

      Q.  What inspires you writing?
A. People! I love love love to people watch and my mind starts creating all these amazing stories for them. Did you know my mail carrier is also an heir to a throne in Europe? Oh, and the lady at Panera who always seems suspicious is actually retired CIA? No, I don’t create an alternate world for everyone I meet. Just the interesting ones.
Q.  What is your favorite thing about being an author?
A.  Well, I may have just answered that in question #1. Honestly, there are two things I love. Weaving story and meeting fans. Both complete me.
Q.  What is the toughest part of being an author?
A.  Spending time away from my husband and two boys. I’ve done book tours and a lot of traveling since the Halflings Series sold and I really miss my guys. But they are great. Even clean the house before I come home. Uh, yeah, I’m sure it needs it!
Q.  If you could not be author, what would you do/be?
A. Independently rich. Hee hee. I tend to get bored easily, so I would need to do something with variety. I would probably get into some type of business where I start other businesses. Creative businesses. Yes, that sounds fun!
Q.  What would the story of your life be entitled?
A.  The Great Race. I’m all about running the race of life. Dig in, find your expression, determine your passion, then go, go, go!
Q.  What is your favorite book of all time?
A.  Oh, this is tough. It changes. I’m reading The Art of War for Writers now and it is amazing! I will be referring to it often. Right now it’s my favorite.
Q.  Which character from ANY book are you most like?
A.  I just finished reading Anomaly. It’s a fascinating book and I found myself seeing me in the main character Thalli.
Q.  What character from all of your book are you most like?
A. I’m probably most like the Halfling, Winter. She has seen and been through a lot, but takes the painful things in life and turns them into help for others. She learns, she applies. If I’m not like her, I’d like to be.
Q.  What is your favorite season?
A. I live in Southern Florida. We only have two seasons. Hot and hotter. Just kidding. I really love all the seasons here. I think I was born to live in a tropical climate. But if I’m home in Missouri, I love the summer! Yes, I’m a warm weather girl.
Q.  What inspired your book cover(s)?  Or what is your favorite book cover and why?
A. I gave some ideas to my publisher for the book covers, but ultimately, they make those decisions. My favorite of the three Halflings books is the Avenger cover. I LOVE the purple. And Nikki just looks ready to kick some butt. I got to choose the leather jacket she’s wearing. My editor sent me three or four pictures of motorcycle jackets they were considering for the photo shoot. I got to pick the one she has on.
Q.  Tell me something funny that happened while on a book tour or while promoting your book.
A. Oh dear. This is an embarrassing story. We were sitting at dinner and Bill Myers and I had ordered a giant boat of sushi to share. Our publicist was telling us a really sad story about her dog and without realizing it, I scooped up the entire mound of wasabi with my first piece of sushi. I can’t really explain the mix of emotions and sensations that causes. My head started burning from my hair follicles. She talked on, and I couldn’t interrupt because it would have been SOOOO rude. So I chewed and swallowed, hoping no one noticed. She finished her story right after my brain stopped buzzing and when she saw the tears in my eyes, she gave me a pat on my arm, appreciating the empathy for her dog. I guess my eyes read, “I understand.” What they were really saying was, “Help! She’s trying to boil us in acid!” I never admitted it to her. Didn’t tell the others. I didn’t order another mound of wasabi.
Q.  Are you working on something new?
A.  I have a couple of irons in the fire. J One is a YA that has been so much fun to work on. The other is an epic romance spanning from WWII to now.
Q.  Anything you want to say to followers of this blog or those that are just stopping by?
A. Don’t eat a mound of wasabi! No matter how tempted you may be. It’s not worth it. On a more serious note, anytime I get the chance, I love to encourage people to go after their dreams! Chase your dream until it chases you. And thanks for being readers. I hope you check out the Halflings Series and if you do, I hope I hear from you.
