Review: Don't Give The Dog Sugar With His Tea by G S McClellan (Author), Mengyu Chen (Illustrator)

Dsc_0331.mediumGordon McClellan, once mistaken for Pete Sampras at a New York Yankees game, enjoys tennis, but is no Pete Sampras! He is the fourth of six children, a husband, father, uncle, and an ordained Presbyterian Minister. A graduate of Haverford College, Yale Divinity School and Wesley Theological Seminary, where he did his doctorate work, Gordon was the founder and editor-in-chief of a start-up independent magazine that gained national distribution (Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, etc) and won four national awards. Former President Clinton described the magazine as having "great articles" and said, "I really enjoyed my interview with Gordon." Habitat for Humanity Founder Millard Fuller was "quite impressed with the whole publication." And former Secretary of State James Baker described the magazine as "a reliable source for news and commentary about our nation and the world."

In recent years, Gordon has turned the focus of his writing to children, because what's more important than enriching the thoughts and dreams of our youngest generation? His goal is to create fun, engaging & occasionally laugh-out-loud picture books, about topics that matter in the lives of children today.

Gordon lives in Vermont, where he works as a minister. He spends his spare time tending to his family's organic garden, baking bread, and learning ways to grow fruit & vegetables all year round (yes, even in the winter).

Review:

Love is what I feel for this book.  I loved the humorous and engaging story and the beautiful, colorful illustrations.  My kids absolutely loved this story too.  They were laughing at all the shenanigans the dog got into after getting hopped up on sugar.  We try to eat very healthy in our home and my children knew exactly why the dog was going bananas. Don't Give The Dog Sugar With His Tea is a great story to teach kids to limit their sugar intake and the consequences if they don't.  I will create a whole classroom lesson around this book!  I highly recommend it and rate it 5 stars.

Book Description

July 7, 2012
Don't Give The Dog Sugar With His Tea! tells the wild adventure of a dog who has had too much sugar. Children love the clanging and banging of the chase he has with the cat and mouse! But the story also makes a subtle point about the need to reduce our consumption of sugar.
