#MMBBR Coloring Dream Mandalas by Wendy Piersall

Coloring Dream Mandalas

Coloring mandalas is an ancient way to attain focus, clarity, and peace. Now, Coloring Dream Mandalas adds the beauty of the dream world—including dreamcatchers, sacred geometry, angels and fantastical creatures—to these intricate designs for page after page of coloring book bliss.

With roots in Hinduism and Buddhism, mandalas are spiritual symbols that represent the universe. Coloring these hypnotically beautiful, mystical shapes is a meditative and enjoyable way to relax. A fun way to achieve a state of mindfulness, this book fosters creativity, reduces stress, and allows readers to embrace their inner child by focusing on the simple but engaging task of coloring in the detailed designs.

I have found coloring to be a bit of a meditative experience.  I set aside at least 20 minutes a few times a week for this very relaxing activity.  I find this particular coloring book to be very enjoyable as I loved that some of the pictures had sayings, words and quotes while others were just beautiful drawings.  It is easy to get lost in the very dreamy and inspiring drawings. I have colored the below picture using ultra fine markers,  I love that there endless ways to create your own works of art.   4 stars

Written in a spare, lyrical style using fresh, evocative imagery, In a Village by the Sea tells the story of longing for the comforts of home. A perfect book for teaching about diverse cultures and lifestyles through rich pictures and words, moving from the wide world to the snugness of home and back out again.

MY REVIEW:

WOW, this is a gorgeous circle story that has some of the most beautiful illustrations.  It is a story that captures of the love of family, the sense of community and the fact that home is always where the heart is.  My kids and I loved this book so much and I cannot wait to develop it into a lesson plan.  There is so much to love both in the story, which is beautifully written and also within the wonderful detail in the illustrations.  This is one of my favorite children's books that I have read in a long time! 5 stars!!!

How do you deal with tattletales? When should you tell on someone? Lola struggles with her little brother Zeke and his tattletale behavior in this sequel to Lola Goes to Work.

MY REVIEW:

An adorable story captured in pictures of two adorable pups and one silly cat.  My son loved that the story had "a tiny story line with problems that were all solved in the end".  This is a great book for my classroom as well, as we do a lot of talking about tattling.  It can also be used for the pet lesson as well.  Any dog lover will adore this book!  My sons and I loved it and so did our Yorkie- ShihTzu, Zoe!!!  4 stars

I highly recommend this book."

A book that seems so simple, but is so much more complex than that.  Teaching a child to read is a difficult thing and this book really helps to create success when a child first starts to read.  With rhyme and pictures this book will inspire any young one to love reading!

Books in the Classroom with Yvonne: Luna Luna by Sam Ryan

Luna Luna
By: Sam Ryan

Love…Love…Love this book! Luna Luna is my new mentor text for teaching small moment personal narrative writing. The message of never giving up is dominate throughout the book. Roshi is a little boy on a mission (with an unknown friend if the reader reads the illustrations closely) to capture the moon. His perseverance and problem-solving has every reader cheering him on. The surprise ending is sure to leave you adoring Roshi even more.

When teaching reading this book can be used for:

  • Envisioning
  • Predicting
  • Character traits
  •  Vocabulary development (beckoned, gurgled, trickling, plunged, etc.)

When teaching students how to develop and enhance small moment personal narrative stories use this book for:
  • Planning a small moment story with a beginning, middle and end
  • Adding voice without using dialogue
  • Producing an effect by using punctuation (… , --)
  • Repeated word usage for dramatic effect
  • Adjectives to help with envisioning (ie. twisted stump)
  • Word endings (-ly, -ed, -ing)
  • Verb usage (see above)

Finally the page layout is a perfect example for students to follow when writing and creating their own stories. The water colored illustrations are wonderful for showcasing the moon and nighttime. This is definitely a book that every teacher of personal narrative writing should have in their classroom. 5 stars.
