While living out her early twenties in L.A., Kristin Dow started writing screenplays. Then she did the last thing an aspiring screenwriter should do. She left Hollywood. Fiction writing stuck with her, however, and she has completed two novels to date: UNBRIDLED HOLIDAY and LIBERTY & MEANS. Kristin now lives in the Denver area where she is working on a novella.

Q. What inspires your writing?

A. Many things, but at the top of the list is music; it has such power to transport the mind. Travel, art, food, and wine rank high as well.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

A. Working from home and making my own schedule. Having Eureka moments when an idea strikes or I finally figure out how to express an idea. Being in the zone and my fingers seem to dance on their own across the keyboard. And I love writing dialogue.

Q. What is the toughest part of being a writer?

A. Same as above: working from home and making my own schedule. Writing requires discipline and structure which can get tossed out the window all too often.

Q. If you could not be writer, what would you do/be?

A. A food critic!

Q. What would the story of your life be entitled?

A. “Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.”

Q. What is your favorite book of all time?

A. Too hard to narrow down, but I remember reading THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP as a teen and it was the first time I considered writing myself.

Q. Which character from ANY book are you most like?

A. That’s a tough one. Recently, I felt a close kinship with Alice Pearse from A WINDOW OPENS. Loved that book!

Q. What character from all of your books are you most like?

A. Probably Brook Holliday from UNBRIDLED HOLIDAY. We are both recovering A-types with a creative side. Shannon Clark (LIBERTY & MEANS) is very different from me; I’m way more emotional than her, but we do share similar principles...and an appreciation for The Grape.

Q. Which book would you love to take a weekend vacation inside of?

A. Any of Frances Mayes’ Tuscany series. Beautiful places, amazing food and wine. But a weekend would be too short.

Q. What is your favorite season?

A. Spring and fall in equal measure.

Q. What inspired your book cover(s)? Or what is your favorite book cover and why?

A. Well, my first book, UNBRIDLED HOLIDAY, had 2 predecessors before I found the right cover. It’s a woman adrift in a swimming pool which sets the tone of the story and captures Brook’s mindset. For LIBERTY & MEANS, we see a woman walking away on a cobblestone street. After an exhaustive search and playing with a few ideas, once I found that picture, I knew it was the one. Again, it came down to what was a good fit for the tone and theme of the book.

Q. Tell me something funny that happened while on a book tour or while promoting your book.

A. I don’t have a good tidbit here; I’ve never done a book tour myself. But I’ve been lucky enough to see many writers I admire in person. When I lived in Kansas City and Janet Evanovich came to town, it was seriously like Elvis was in the building. She had her own tricked-out tour bus and the audience went nuts for her!

Q. Are you working on something new?

A. I’m working on a novella which is a Thomas Crown Affair type story with a twist. I’m also working on a sisters novel which is still in its scattered notes phase, but I’ve had the characters in my head for years. Going to tackle that one once my kid is in school full-time.
