Blog Tour: Devil’s Dreamcatcher by Donna Hosie @donnahosie @HolidayHouseBks #MMBBR

Displaying Tour Graphic.jpg

About the Book
In this emotional and action-packed sequel to the critically acclaimed THE DEVIL'S INTERN, Team DEVIL reunites and takes readers on another journey to the land of the living—this time, to stop a madman from unleashing the terror of The Devil's most prized possession, his dreamcatcher.
Medusa Pallister is about to interview for the most important job of her existence: an internship in Hell's accounting office. If she gets it, she'll report to Septimus, the coolest boss in the underworld. But the job will also mean working with Septimus's other intern, Mitchell Johnson.
Medusa has a history with Mitchell. The only trouble is, she can't remember what that history is. All she knows is that she saw him and two other devils outside her house while she was still alive. When Medusa is united with Team DEVIL, she thinks she'll finally get some answers. But the teens soon have bigger problems to face when an Unspeakable escapes from Hell with The Devil's dreamcatcher. In the wrong hands, this repository for all The Devil’s most horrific thoughts could be wielded as the worst weapon the realms of the living and dead have ever seen. To prevent this disaster, Medusa must find the courage to come to terms with her dual pasts, lead Team DEVIL and a counterpart team of unruly angels from Up There into horrifying danger, and face down The Devil himself in a surprising twist that no one, not even The Devil, could have foreseen.

  1. What inspires your writing? The environment more than anything. I have a strong imagination and can see magic hidden away around us. I daydream so much on public transport I often miss my stop!

  1. What is your favorite thing about being an writer? Writing is my creative outlet. I’m not sporty - although I love to watch it; I don’t cook - my family would starve to death if my husband didn’t cook!; and I’m left—handed so I’m more likely to maim myself with tools than make something; but I can write, and I think I’m pretty good at it. I’ve never had writer’s block. It’s fun. I’d be lost without it.

  1. What is the toughest part of being an writer? Rejection. It’s guaranteed, regardless of where you are in the process. Universal love doesn’t exist. It’d be nice though!

  1. If you could not be writer, what would you do/be? I’d like to be a tour guide in the Louvre.

  1. What would the story of your life be entitled? “She Came, She Saw, She Ate Her Body Weight in Chocolate!”

  1. What is your favorite book of all time? This changes yearly, but as of this moment I would say THE RAVEN BOYS by Maggie Stiefvater.

  1. Which character from ANY book are you most like? I’d like to think I’m a bit like Hermione Granger. I’m a big believer in the power of books, learning  and I’m a loyal friend.

  1. What character from all of your books are you most like? I guess I’m a little like Medusa from the Devil’s series. I’m self-sufficient, guarded, and I like my Converse sneakers!

  1. Which book would you love to take a weekend vacation inside of? THE RAVEN BOYS, but I want Gansey and Ronan with me the whole time!

  1. What do you want to be remembered for 100 years from now? As a writer who made people think as well as laugh.

  1. What is your favorite season? Spring. I’m not a winter person at all. I love the colors of spring. It’s a season for renewal.

  1. What inspired your book cover(s)?  Or what is your favorite book cover and why? I’ve been really lucky with book covers because I love colour, and that’s what I’ve been given with every release so far. From my Camelot books, I love the cover of THE RING OF MORGANA because it’s just so pretty. With my Devil’s novels, THE DEVIL’S INTERN is my favourite because that block of vivid red just stands out a mile away on a bookshelf.

  1. Tell me something funny that happened while on a book tour or while promoting your book. Last November I took a trip to New York. I currently live in Australia and was jet lagged to Hell and back as I had travelled via the UK. Within an hour of arriving in New York I was having lunch with my amazing agent Beth, and my equally amazing editor Kelly. I was told THE DEVIL’S INTERN had been made a Kirkus Reviews Teen Book of 2014, then I met my publishing team, signed a ton of books, met people from Kirkus and School Library Journal, and was then taken to The Plaza for cocktails! I became so overwhelmed I started hyperventilating in the toilets of The Plaza! This was my first time by myself in New York and I ended up walking from Central Park to Times Square, grinning insanely at everyone I passed on the way. I can’t even remember the route I took. I just remember thinking “This is it. The moment I have worked years for.” Everyone else must have thought I was a total idiot!

  1. Are you working on something new? Always!

  1. Anything you want to say to followers of this blog or those that are just stopping by? If you have a dream, go for it and give everything you have to it, because when you achieve it, it’s the best feeling in the world.

#MMBBR Review: We Never Asked for Wings By Vanessa Diffenbaugh @bookofthemonth @VDiffenbaugh

BookoftheMonth

My Pick for September via Book of the Month was.....

From the beloved New York Times bestselling

author of The Language of Flowers comes her much-anticipated new novel about young love, hard choices, and hope against all odds.

For fourteen years, Letty Espinosa has worked three jobs around San Francisco to make ends meet while her mother raised her children—Alex, fifteen, and Luna, just six—in their tiny apartment on a forgotten spit of wetlands near the bay. But now Letty’s parents are returning to Mexico, and Letty must step up and become a mother for the first time in her life.

Navigating this new terrain is challenging for Letty, especially as Luna desperately misses her grandparents and Alex, who is falling in love with a classmate, is unwilling to give his mother a chance. Letty comes up with a plan to help the family escape the dangerous neighborhood and heartbreaking injustice that have marked their lives, but one wrong move could jeopardize everything she’s worked for and her family’s fragile hopes for the future.

Vanessa Diffenbaugh blends gorgeous prose with compelling themes of motherhood, undocumented immigration, and the American Dream in a powerful and prescient story about family.

This book was AMAZING from cover to cover.  It is brilliantly written and heart breaking and hopeful and unputdownable all in one.  We Never Asked for Wings is a story that will stick to my heart for a long time.  Written in a way that steered clear of what has been done before and paved a path with a new story that cannot help but pull the reader in and create a sense of connection between the reader and characters.  This is a must read for all book clubs and a 5 star read!!!

#MMBBR Books in the Classroom with Yvonne! @HolidayHouseBks

1-001
The Sun Dance
By: Casandra Mei-Fong Lee

The illustrations drew me in the first time I read this book. I found the warm, earthy, colors and tremendous amount of detail were fun to “read”
without the words. The book is based on a conversation between Earth and Sun. As Earth explains to Sun the important role it plays in making Earth the way it is; a friendship between the two develops. This book would be fun to read to students with their eyes closed and have them visualize and draw their own illustrations. 3.5 stars

A Night at the Zoo
By: Kathy Caple

I can’t wait to share this book with my beginning readers. It is often difficult to find stories for beginning readers that actually have a fun story line. Caple does an amazing job of incorporating easy to read dialogue, sound words and different types of punctuation (ellipses) for readers to practice in a “real” book. The students will love the fun twist at the end when they infer what the zoo animals did with Pop’s phone while it was “lost”. A perfect book to add to any primary classroom library! 5 stars

Pete Makes a Mistake
By: Emily Arnold McCully

The I Like to Read books are ideal books for classroom libraries. Pete Makes a Mistake can be used with young readers to help them develop an understanding of character traits by referring to what characters say and do, predicting and inferring the message the story is teaching the reader. When Pete forgets to deliver one invitation for a party, feelings are hurt. But since Pete admits his mistake and does the right thing, all the friends can share in a fun afternoon. 4 stars

#MMBBR Review: The Relationship Riddle by Susan Paulson Clark @susanpclark

25251561

Not your typical love story ...

Vince, a football coach who foster-parents a five-year-old boy, dodges romance like a shifty running back. Belle, who runs her own business, has sworn off chasing men like Vince. A strong attraction comes into play and Belle and Vince start dating -- but with all their objections and temptations, will the flame keep burning? When Vince and his foster son find themselves in harm’s way, Vince and Belle’s involvement takes a surprising new direction.

I love a good feel good story with heart.  The Relationship Riddle is one of those books.  It is character driven and honest.  "The Stupidhead's Relationship Guide" provides hope after divorce and mistakes made in the past.  It follows Vince and Belle and throughout the pages you come to understand them and relate to them.  There is definite heart in these pages and it is a great book to cuddle up with when the Fall leaves fall!  4 stars

"William the Dragon Rider": #MMBBR Review: True Heroes: A Treasury of Modern-day Fairy Tales Written by Best-selling Authors by Jonathan Diaz, Brandon Mull, Ally Condie, Adam Glendon Sidwell

This one-of-a-kind treasury brings together the talents of nearly two dozen bestselling middle-grade authors including Shannon Hale, Brandon Mull, Ally Condie and Jennifer A. Nielsen-who have created original short stories, modern-day fairy tales, based on the lives and dreams of children they have met who all have two things in common: They have very big hopes and dreams and they are all cancer patients. Each short story is prefaced by a brief introductionary bio of the child and is accompanied by photographs of the child, fully costumed and digitally inserted into a background-A baker, a dancer, a superhero, a dragon fighter, a sports star, a princess and more- that makes them the hero of their own modern day fairy tale story written by one of their favorite authors.

There are not enough words as to how much I loved this book!  I was left feeling completely inspired and in awe of both the heroic kids featured, but also by the brilliant author who wrote the stories!  How can you not be moved to tears to see the question "If you could be anything, what would you be?" to bought to the page.  These brave children bared their dreams for us to see.  I am crying when I try to put into words how this book made me feel.  It shows the true spirit of the bright light of children even in difficult times, like sickness.  That despite these hard times, they can dream and inspire and move others.  They let their wonderful souls show and created a one-in-a-lifetime read that I know will move you to tears too!  5 over-the-moon stars!!!

#MMBBR Showcase: OtherWorld: YA Fantasy Adventure by Evan Ronan

Aoife Finley is bursting at the seams with creativity. No one daydreams better than her and her imagination knows no bounds.

Mr. Peterson is old, his best days long behind him. He yearns for the past, mistrusts the present, and fears the future. But he's just figured out how to recapture his past:

By stealing other people's imaginations.

Armed with only her creativity, imaginary friends, and a few bickering classmates, Aoife embarks on an amazing, but dangerous journey into the otherworld that she created, a place that is slipping more and more out of her control and into Mr. Peterson’s, before the real world as she knows it—and as it could be—disappears forever.

OtherWorld is a YA fantasy adventure about the power of the imagination and how anything is possible. It is 80,000 words long and Evan Ronan’s first (but hopefully not last) YA novel.

Evan Ronan

Evan Ronan is the author of The Unearthed, a paranormal thriller series that gives readers a little bit of everything: mystery, horror, suspense, action, and deadpan humor. Featuring protagonist Eddie McCloskey, a complex character looking for redemption, readers have said:

"This is an awesome series of books."
"So many twists and turns."
"I just couldn't put it down."
"Two days to read all five books."
"Deserves more than five stars."
"Great pacing, sympathetic characters, and a twisty plot."

In these books, Evan explores that daunting grey area where reason intersects with superstition. There is nothing more terrifying than the unknown...

Evan also loves historical fiction and with fellow author Nathanael Green writes The Tomahawk and Saber series. Set in the Pennsylvania Colony in the days of the French and Indian War, these books are good old-fashioned, character-driven adventure stories where cultures clash and life is nasty, brutish, and often short. The first in the series is called Language of the Bear.

But that's not all...

Known for her “hilarious and spot-on”* memoirs I’ve Still Got It…I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It and If It Was Easy, They’d Call the Whole Damn Thing a Honeymoon, Jenna McCarthy turns her comedic talents to fiction with a novel about picking yourself up out of the gutter when life kicks you to the curb…

“I don’t love you anymore.”

For Charlotte Crawford, the worst part about being dumped after twenty years of marriage is that her husband, Jack, doesn’t want another woman; he just doesn’t want her.

Forty-two and clueless, Charlotte is a fish out of water in a dating pool teeming with losers. Just when she thinks she’s finally put her failed marriage behind her, it comes back to bite her in the ass…hard. Without warning, Charlotte finds herself staring down the barrel of a future she wouldn’t (she would totally) wish on her worst enemy.

Engaging, fearless, and relentlessly funny, Pretty Much Screwed is a story of love, loss, friendship, forgiveness, turtledoves, taxidermy, and one hilariously ill-placed tick.

From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

A goldfish named Ian is falling from the 27th-floor balcony on which his fishbowl sits. He's longed for adventure, so when the opportunity arises, he escapes from his bowl, clears the balcony railing and finds himself airborne. Plummeting toward the street below, Ian witnesses the lives of the Seville on Roxy residents.

There's the handsome grad student, his girlfriend, and his mistress; the construction worker who feels trapped by a secret; the building's super who feels invisible and alone; the pregnant woman on bed rest who craves a forbidden ice cream sandwich; the shut-in for whom dirty talk, and quiche, are a way of life; and home-schooled Herman, a boy who thinks he can travel through time. Though they share time and space, they have something even more important in common: each faces a decision that will affect the course of their lives. Within the walls of the Seville are stories of love, new life, and death, of facing the ugly truth of who one has been and the beautiful truth of who one can become.

Sometimes taking a risk is the only way to move forward with our lives. As Ian the goldfish knows, "An entire life devoted to a fishbowl will make one die an old fish with not one adventure had."

In the tradition of Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain and Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, Bradley Somer's Fishbowl is at turns funny and heartbreaking.
